Apps Won’t Load or Keep Closing on a TCL TV

UgurSep 14, 20268 min read

If apps on your TCL TV will not load, freeze on the opening screen, or close by themselves, start with a complete restart of the TV and a quick check of your internet connection. These two steps often clear temporary software and network problems without changing your settings.

Next, test more than one app. If only one app is affected, the problem is probably limited to that app or its service. If every app is slow or closes, focus on the TV, its network connection, or its system software. TCL TVs use different platforms and menu layouts depending on the model, so the exact names and locations of settings may vary.

1. Restart the TCL TV completely

Using the remote to turn the TV off may leave it in a standby state. A full power cycle gives the TV a chance to close stuck processes and clear temporary memory.

  1. Turn off the TCL TV.
  2. Unplug the TV from the wall outlet.
  3. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  4. Plug the TV directly back into the outlet.
  5. Turn it on and test the problem app.

If the TV is connected through a surge protector or power strip, temporarily connect it directly to a working wall outlet. Do not repeatedly unplug the TV while it is starting, updating, or displaying a warning. If the TV does not respond normally after the restart, the issue may be broader than an app problem. Our guide to a TCL TV that keeps restarting covers that situation separately.

2. Check whether the internet connection is the real problem

An app may appear to be broken when the TV cannot reach its servers. The app may remain on a loading screen, show a blank page, or close after a timeout.

Open another app that normally requires an internet connection. You can also try loading a different video or content section within the same app. If everything is slow or several apps fail, restart your router and modem if you have separate devices:

  1. Turn off or unplug the router and modem.
  2. Wait about one minute.
  3. Reconnect the modem first, if you have one.
  4. Wait for its connection lights to settle.
  5. Reconnect the router and wait for the wireless network to return.
  6. Test the TCL TV again.

Move the router closer to the TV or temporarily test the TV on a different network, such as a phone hotspot. A hotspot is only a diagnostic test and may use mobile data quickly, so do not use it for extended streaming unless your plan allows it. If the TV disconnects often, see our guide to Wi-Fi disconnecting on a TCL TV.

3. Test another app and check for a service outage

Try at least two or three apps. The results help narrow down the cause:

Apps Won’t Load or Keep Closing on a TCL TV
  • One app fails while others work: The app may need to be updated, reinstalled, or checked for a service outage.
  • Several apps fail: The network connection, TV software, or available storage may be involved.
  • Apps open but videos will not play: Check the network, date and time settings, and the app’s service status.
  • Apps open and close immediately: A stuck app process, damaged app data, low storage, or a system software issue is possible.

Search for the app’s official service-status information from a phone or computer. If the service is experiencing an outage, changing settings on the TV will not fix it. Wait until the service is restored before making more advanced changes.

4. Close and reopen the affected app

Some TCL TV platforms allow you to exit an app by pressing the Home button and then opening it again. On other models, you may need to use an app management, recent apps, or force-stop option in the settings. The wording depends on the TV platform.

Do not press random options if your menu looks different from these instructions. Look for a setting that clearly refers to applications, installed apps, or app management. Select the affected app only if you can identify it, then choose an option such as stopping, closing, or clearing temporary data. Avoid clearing all TV data at this stage.

5. Clear the app cache or temporary data

Cached files help apps load faster, but they can become damaged or outdated. Clearing temporary cache data may fix an app that freezes or closes without deleting your account. However, not every TCL TV platform offers the same cache controls.

Look in the TV’s settings for an area related to apps or installed applications. Select the affected app and check whether a cache-clearing option is available. Read the description carefully before confirming. A cache option normally removes temporary files, while a data or storage reset may remove sign-in information, downloaded settings, or other app data.

After clearing the cache, reopen the app. You may need to sign in again if you selected a broader reset option. If the app still fails, move to an update or reinstall rather than repeatedly clearing the same data.

6. Update the app and the TV software

An outdated app may stop working correctly after the streaming service changes its software. The TV’s system software can also contain compatibility fixes. Check the TV’s app store or app update area for an update to the affected app.

Then check the TV’s system settings for a software update. Menu names differ by TCL model and operating system, so you may see the update option under device preferences, system settings, support, or a similar section. Do not assume that every TCL TV uses the same process.

Keep the TV connected to stable power and internet during an update. Do not unplug it unless the on-screen instructions specifically tell you to do so. If the TV reports that it is already up to date, continue with the next step rather than trying to install unofficial software.

7. Check available storage

Some smart TVs can behave unpredictably when very little internal storage remains. Apps may fail to update, open slowly, or close after launching. If your TV includes a storage or device-management screen, review the space available.

Remove apps you no longer use, but keep the changes limited to optional apps. Avoid deleting system components or changing developer settings. After removing an app, restart the TV and test the affected service again.

If the TV has very limited storage and the problem returns after reinstalling apps, the issue may be related to the television’s platform or hardware. In that case, note the model number and the exact behavior before contacting TCL support or a qualified repair service.

8. Reinstall the problem app

Reinstalling is useful when one app continues to close after a restart, network check, cache cleanup, and update. Before removing it, make sure you know the email address and password used for the account. If the service uses a separate activation code or sign-in process, keep access to your phone or computer nearby.

  1. Open the TV’s app list or app store.
  2. Remove or uninstall the affected app if the option is available.
  3. Restart the TCL TV.
  4. Install the app again from the TV’s official app store.
  5. Open it and sign in again.

If there is no uninstall option, the app may be built into the TV platform. Look for an update, cache reset, or app reset instead. Do not download a replacement app from an unknown website or connect unapproved storage devices to install software.

9. Verify the TV’s date, time, and location settings

Incorrect date or time information can sometimes interfere with secure connections. This may cause an app to reject a connection even though the TV appears to be online.

Open the TV’s date and time settings and use the automatic network-based option if your model provides one. Check the location or region setting as well, especially if the app is unavailable or content appears different from what you expect. These options vary by model and may affect which apps are offered, so change them only when you understand the result.

10. Use a factory reset only as a last resort

A factory reset can resolve deeper software problems, but it removes personal settings and may sign you out of apps. It may also erase network information, picture adjustments, parental controls, and other customized preferences. Because the reset process differs by TCL model, do not follow instructions for a different platform without checking first.

Before resetting, write down your Wi-Fi password and confirm that you can sign back in to each important streaming account. Check whether the issue affects one app or all apps, and record any message displayed on the screen. If the TV is still under warranty or has a serious system problem, contact TCL support before resetting.

After the reset, set up only the basics first and test the affected app before reinstalling everything. If the app works after the reset but fails again when other apps or settings are added, add them back gradually to identify the trigger.

Contact TCL support or a qualified technician if apps continue closing after a clean reset, the TV repeatedly reboots, menus freeze across the entire system, or the TV cannot maintain a network connection even after testing another network. These symptoms can point to a broader system, storage, power, or hardware fault rather than a single streaming app.

Have the TV model number, a description of the steps you already tried, and the names of the affected apps ready. Avoid opening the television yourself. Internal components can retain hazardous electrical energy, and opening the chassis may create additional damage or affect service eligibility.
